4AD – 1986 / Cocteau Twins

Os escoceses Cocteau Twins foram uma das coqueluches da editora independente britânica 4AD na década de 80, a par dos Dead Can Dance e dos This Mortal Coil. 

Entre 1984 e 1987 os Cocteau Twins viveram o mais flourescente período criativo, com obras notáveis como os álbuns «Treasure», «Victorialand» e «The Moon and the Melodies».

O trio, na altura formado por Robin Guthrie, Elizabeth Fraser e Simon Raymonde, reduziu-se temporariamente ao duo Guthrie e Fraser, por ausência de Raymonde, o multi-instrumentista que então se ocupava profundamente na execução do segundo trabalho do projecto This Mortal Coil, o álbum «Filigree And Shadow», editado também em 1986.

O guitarriasta Robin Guthrie e a vocalista Elizabeth Fraser regressaram assim ao formato anteriormente levado a cabo no disco de 1983, «Head Over Heels».

O álbum «Victorialand» é semi-acústico e teve a participação especial do saxofonista Richard Thomas, elemento dos Dif Juz. Não está creditado, mas o músico norte-americano Harold Budd também colaborou ao piano neste disco, fruto da colaboração com o grupo nas sessões de gravação da obra «The Moon and the Melodies».

As delicadas texturas de «Victorialand» deixaram definitivamente para trás a força das heranças post-punk com que os Cocteau Twins haviam iniciado a carreira em 1979, tendo o grupo gravado o primeiro álbum em 1982, «Garlands», ainda com o baixista Will Heggie. 

Encontram-se em «Victorialand» paisagens sonoras que remetem para lugares etéreos, momentos planantes da imaginação e dos sentidos. Nunca os Cocteau Twins foram tão longe na viagem exploratória aos sons existentes para lá da linha do horizonte. Dream Pop intemporal. 

O álbum «Victorialand» dos Cocteau Twins foi editado no dia 14 de Abril de 1986. Faz hoje 30 anos.

De referir também o Design gráfico desta edição que, a par de muitas outras da autoria da agência 23 Envelope, fazia parte de uma linguagem editorial comum da editora 4AD. A ponte perfeita entre som e imagem a cargo da dupla Vaughan Oliver e Nigel Grierson.

A edição em vinil contém no interior mais imagens de ímpar beleza gráfica, só possíveis num tempo em que as dimensões dos LP abriam essa amplitude visual.

Outra particularidade deste álbum é ser um LP em 45 rotações por minuto, ao contrário dos outros que eram (e são) a 33.

Autobiografia

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen começou a escrever a sua autobiografia em 2009, após a memorável actuação ao vivo com a E Street Band (ainda com Clarence Clemons), no intervalo da final do Super Bowl.
O Boss vai regressar a Portugal dia 19 de Maio, para actuar no Parque da Bela Vista em Lisboa. Trará a palco a digressão integral dos 35 anos do álbum «The River».
A autobiografia será publicada a 27 de Setembro, quatro dias depois de Springsteen completar 67 anos de idade.

Writing about yourself is a funny business, but in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.
